Reading Is Fundamental – Where the Wild Things Are – Gala

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Gala
On Thursday, May 9, MAX and the WILD THINGS are coming out to play at RIF’s WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE Gala. And whether or not you plan to join us, you can be a part of the action.

Through a special online auction, you can place a bid on one of more than 10 items up for sale that evening – like original artworks from Rosemary Wells, Toni DeTerlizzi, or William Joyce. Be sure to set a maximum bid if you’re not going to be able to join us – that way you’ll be able to bid against guests onsite!

Or, if you’re planning to join us, you can register now and skip the step of signing up during the night of the gala.

Looking for other wild ideas? Download our free activity sheet for WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE to use with the children in your life. And then share photos or stories with us on Facebookor Twitter!

Thanks to supporters like you, RIF was able to bring characters like Max into the lives of
5 million children in need last year alone. The money raised through this auction will support our efforts in the year ahead!

Any questions? Don’t hesitate to contact the gala team at amoffatt@rif.org.

Remember your favorite book as a child?

You read it again and again. You may even still have it, with your name scrawled inside the front cover.

It made you the Book Person you are today.

Imagine never having that book. Imagine a childhood without a book to call your own.

Today, there is only 1 book for every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods in the U.S.

That’s where RIF comes in. To help children with hungry minds.

Children like Michelle, whose teacher credits the books RIF provides with helping her through the sudden loss of her father. Or Rhonda in Nashville, who chose a RIF book not for herself, but because she wanted to read it out loud to her younger sister. Or Aidan, who sent us a card saying kids at his school don’t have enough books.

There are 16 million kids living in poverty in the U.S., and they need our help.

You’re a Book Person. Will you be a Book Hero?

For just $10 a month, RIF can get 4 kids in need a book of their own every single month.

And you’ll get a free RIF bumper sticker.

Help give children a book to scribble their names in, a book to treasure and love, a book to call their own.

P.S. RIF served 4 million children last year, but so many more need our help. Join RIF’s Book Heroes today – at any monthly amount.

MESSAGE FROM READING IS FUNDAMENTAL

Imagine a best-seller list for the issues that matter most.

We see versions of this every Election Year – jobs, the economy, education, health care. But literacy?

Consider this. The child without books is on their way to becoming …

  • 1 of the 33 percent of 4th graders in the U.S. who cannot read at the most basic level
  • 1 of the 7,000 U.S. students who drop out of high school every school day
  • 1 of the 40 million adults in the U.S. who cannot read

There are 16 million children living in poverty in this country.

And for every 300 children in need, there is only 1 book.

Imagine a nation where all children have the books and literacy support they need to write their best life story. Where a greater number of students earn diplomas. Where our workforce is larger, smarter and more innovative. Where all communities are thriving.

It all starts with a book – and Book People like you. Thank you.

And if you haven’t yet, please share the Book People pledge with your family and friends on

Facebook, Twitter and good old-fashioned email.

Book People Unite,

Jay Brown
